O’Brien Stoneworks –
100 Years in Business in Durrow, Co. Laois.
1917 – 2017
O’Brien Stonework’s celebrates 100 years in business in Durrow this year.
John O’Brien and his son Luke and other family members including his younger son John Joe O’Brien founded the O’Brien Stonework’s on the Derry Road in Durrow, Co. Laois in 1917.
In the 1930’s and 40’s O’Brien Stonework’s on the Derry Road was one of the biggest employers with up to forty men including stonecavers/cutters and quarry men in the Quarry on the Derry Road.
During that time, the O’Brien’s have been responsible for serving 1000`s of bereaved families, and the quality of their stonework has won international renown.
Sean O`Brien is a great-great-grandson of John O’Brien, been fifth generation stonecarver and stonecutter, and son of the well-known Cathal O`Brien (RIP) and nephew of the renowned Finbar O`Brien of Durrow, Co. Laois, Ireland.
Like the designs of Celtic Cross, the skills that began in monastic Ireland so long ago, are still handed down today – from father to son, uncle to nephew.
Sean O’Brien continues this craft to this day on the Derry Road in Durrow and specialise in Limestone Celtic Crosses. Our Crosses have gone to the USA and around the globe. We are one of Ireland’s leaders in producing authentic Irish headstones of the highest quality possible. All of our products are hand carved. You can have your own designs on your Celtic Cross, as all are made to order. The Limestone Celtic Cross comes in three standard sizes but if you require your own design, it can be catered for.
In the last twenty years Sean O’Brien specialises in fitting stone cladding to building and paving etc.
